The largest patch of Mediterranean forest in the world. The largest concentration in the world, in a single territory, of the black vulture and the Iberian imperial eagle, two species as unique as they are threatened.
The only place in Europe that is home to all the birds of prey typical of the Mediterranean forest and where the also highly endangered black stork has a refuge where it can escape extinction.
Home to more than 280 species of vertebrates that has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. All this makes Monfragüe a unique and fascinating environment.

No other place in Africa concentrates such a large number of green turtles nesting as the island of Poilao. Up to 40,000 specimens of this threatened and gigantic species, which can exceed 200 kg. weight, they come, every season, to this piece of land to build nests where they can lay their eggs.
It is a tiny island that, despite its size, is an ecosystem with life as abundant as it is varied. There, everything from the palm vulture and the African monitor to African squirrels, weaver ants, chameleons and birds as unique as turacos and sunbirds coexist.
